These (Big Huge Lab & Spell with Flickr) applications are way cool! I have lots of fun ideas. Looking forward to playing around with these more.

With the web, copy right laws have become very difficult to control or enforce and I think it is just going to get more difficult. Kind of makes me think of baking recipes. I love to bake and I find recipes everywhere. Most of what I use, I have found in magazines and I have wondered about the copy rights of a recipe. I have been told that I should enter some of my creations in contests...but I didn't create the recipes - how does that work? I typical have modified them just slightly, to use ingredients that I prefer...but they never seem like they are mine to claim?

Photo Sharing...Flickr

Well, this assignment has me checking out many things I have heard about, but haven't really looked into yet. I have been thinking for some time that I need to get a back up device for my home computer...and it would mostly be for photos as anything else I have that I need secure I store in my email. Anyway, here I am Flickring...and I like it.
How do I feel about sharing my photo's? This is an interesting topic. Currently, for any on line account I have - my photo's are very boring - just of me. I just haven't been able to justify loading tons of pictures of my adoreable nieces and nephews - too worried about their safety. However, many of them are now old enough to have their own accounts and have so many pictures posted that I seem like an old bitty...:) However, I don't believe their photos are public, so back to the question...I am on the fence about this. I will have to test it out more and review more of the settings to see if I will venture to posting "people" pictures. Until then, looks like all you get from me are people-less pictures...

Wiki...
Where do they come up with these names? Well, what type of web design student would I be, if I didn't google where the word wiki comes from? Wiki wiki means "quick" in the Polynesian language. Well, that makes sense. Wiki is quick.
Last fall, after watching a documentary on Woodstock, I went through a little period where I could not get enough infomation about the festival and what was happening in the world at that time. I was amazed mostly by the amount of people that gathered for the event...400,000. I had no idea. When I searched on-line for more information...wikipedia had just what I was looking for. Mountains of information on the festival, the producers and the performers. With a few simple clicks my curiosity was satisfied.
I do think many wiki's could have false information. So, if there is something serious I would need to research; like history of a war, a country, a race, (hmmm not a music festival), I would want to confirm the information found. As for the sites not being allowed for school. I can see that too. Seems there should be some effort put into the needed "research" for an assignment. Cliff notes cannot replace the experience of reading a book, nor can "google" replace "researching" a topic in it's entirety. At least, it seems it shouldn't be able too, but then again I can be a bit old fashion at times and it just doesn't seem appropiate to be able to complete school work with wikipedia..."but the times, they are a-changin'"...and he wasn't even at the festival :).

Document Editing...
I think these tools are highly needed! I haven't used them before this assignment but had heard about them. I think these would be especially helpful in the workplace. The last few companies I worked for had documents all over the place and so many shared drives they couldn't keep track of the drives, what was on them or who had access to them. I believe companies today should be utilizing these tools as much as possible.

Newsvine...
I am signed up on Newsvine. I have more interest in this tool as it seems to be information about actually newsworthy events and not just celebrity status - which I don't have much interest in.
I am not sure what I think about the lack of an editor...without one, news will be funneled to me by what the mass population deems interesting and I am not sure that I share their same interests...maybe...but I don't care what most entertainer's are up to in their personal lives...unless of course, it's something good ;)...

TWITTER!
What I won't do for a good grade? I now have a twitter account. I am even following things. Ok, well so far I am only following things of interest like, art, design, news...not...people. Ok well, I have to confess...I did send my niece an invite - is that what that is? Or no, wait that is facebook. Ok well I believe she will be getting a message that will inform her that I want to follow her...however I think she already knows this as I have been her unwanted guardian angel for 20+ years now...
TWITTER! TWO
When I did finally create my twitter account - guess what I did? I came straight to my blog to you know - Blog about it...and Blog was not available! Image my disappointment over not being able to blog about my twittering...

Facebook...

I have had a facebook acount for a little over a year now. Something I was sure I would never have! I don't enter a "status" as I feel if there is something I really want someone to know about my day - I email them directly or call them...guess, I am kind of old fashion that way.
But, I have enjoyed being able to connect with old friends and see how many of the people I grew up with are doing...it's be fun!

LinkedIn...

I have had a LinkedIn account for the past few years...I have to say that I probably don't use it like I should. Given this assignment I felt the need to log in and update my profile with my new company/postion and schooling and reviewed/updated several of my contacts. I think it is always a good idea to keep in touch with previous collueges, you never know where that will lead and this is a great too to just that.

Plaxo...

At this time, I am not setting up an account. I feel I already have too many accounts to keep updated - this would just be one more!

Difference between Professional and Social networking?

With the internet, I don't there is much of a difference. I think people need to be wise about what they post...since most can see it. Of course, there are the security settings, but why take the risk of posting something questionable, if it could ruin a great opportunity?

Now that I have written this I am thinking...is this really any different than life "in person"?

I think the difference is ease of access and the fact that it is not face to face communication with a person or group. This sometimes allows people to let go of their inhibitions and forget their manners and good sense.
